I am relatively new to this discussion group, but wanted to throw out to you guys a recent project we put together.

My collegues and I at McNeese State University have put together a national engraving portfolio exchange. It features such artists as Rudy Pozzatti, David Driesbach, Jack Orman, Oscar Gillespie, Kurt Kemp and Will Fleishell (he engraved the portrait of Linclon on the 5$). The stipulations were that the paper size be 11 x 14 and the only technique to be used was burin on metal (like Durer). We got some pretty nice results..below is a link to the site....

Beginning in the Fall of 2007, I will be taking over the engraving arts program at Emporia State University, so I am working to promote this dying technique. I have plans in the future to have another exchange, but make it exclusive to students, not professionals. If anyone is interested learning more about this technique feel free to contact me.
I've got 2 plates engraved, one black and one color but all I had on hand was water based ink. It turned out kind of interesting, but not the thick even color that I remember.. Perhaps it was a combination of intaglio and relief? Will using the greasy printers ink give me a more even coverage? I guess there is a chance that some of my color field isn't etched deep enough.

Also, I am thinking of trying some viscosity prints. Anyhow had luck with these?

We've been trying to make it work- but to no avail- anyone know this process and what we might be doing wrong?
1- light coat a plexi-glass plate with gum arabic (we've been using the little bottle made for watercolor- is print-making gum arabic different?)
2- lay fresh xerox copy on plexi image side up coat with generous layer of gum arabic, rub off excess with damp sponge
3- roll with oil-based printing ink
4-gently wipe off excess with damp sponge (THIS IS THE PART WHERE IT STARTS TO GO WRONG) ink should stick to toner areas
5- print using xerox as your plate
When we do it, the ink adheres to the entire surface, and when we start to sponge it off, the image and paper starts to fall apart.....

I'm doing some writing in the "occult/magick/chaos magick" vein and I would like to have some custom woodcuts/prints done. Some are purely artistic, and some will be diagrams. I'm thinking less than 10 or so, max. They will need to be made, then printed and scanned at 300dpi and e-mailed as some standard graphics format (TIFF, PDF, PNG, etc. - no lossy compression!). The book will probably be about 6"x9" in size, but the prints can be larger and scaled down a bit, if needed, and they will vary in size (probably only full page and half page)

Pay is pretty close to non-existent, but credit will be given. If any money flows towards us, you can have some. The book will be printed by a print-on-demand publisher, and you can have some copies for personal use, portfolio additions, or gifts as you want, at cost.

Drop me a note if you're interested. Thanks!

I’m still relatively new to the area and I'm not quite sure what schools should I look at.

Folks, I found this really nice sounding print exchange in Belgium. The deadline is end of the year and the cost to participate is absolutely minimal ($5) Just submit 11 copies of identical bookmark, signed and numbered. YOu get 10 different bookmarks back. Size: 20cm x 5 cm.

More information is here:
http://www.estampe.be/exchange/book2005/index.html

check out the submissions from the last time they did that exchange. There is a lot of reeeaaaaly cool stuff in there:
http://www.estampe.be/exchange/book2001/index.html

I plan to submit a set, or maybe even two if I have time. Anybody else planning to submit something?

As we are talking about this already... what are your thoughts on whether to cut the bookmarks or rip them? I always think the fuzzy edges of ripped printing paper look nice. But a bookmark is a utility item despite being a piece of artwork... it might be better to cut in this case. It will also make it easier to have consistent sizes. And it's not exactly easy to rip such small papers either...

Any thoughs?

I mentioned a bit ago in another thread about having a print exchange. An old idea where a bunch of printmakers exchange a set of prints with others in like exchange. Every one receives each others prints. Quite a wonderful way to see and own more art through a very inexpensive means.

This is being done on a frequently used site called The Barren. They've honed down the process and it seems to be working quite well for them. Below are their guidelines and instructions on how they submit, gather, and distribute the prints.

http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/rules.html

Although the information on the exchange sign-up page is quite clearly outlined, some participants in the past have not followed the format very closely. This has made life very difficult for the volunteer coordinators, and has caused no little friction between participants.

Rather than developing new 'rules' we are requesting potential participants to read and understand the guidelines for participation. Members should only sign-up for an exchange, if they are willing to make the effort required to achieve the exchange goals, and to meet the guidelines.

Deadlines:

Participants must plan to send their work in early enough to ensure that the print package arrives by the deadline. This may mean sending the work one-week or earlier before the deadline, depending on the method of delivery and the country of origin. Participants from countries other than the coordinator's should determine the time required for delivery. If work is not received by the deadline the participant will be notified that unless it is received within the next 7 days the work can not be included in the exchange. If the work is received after this one week extension the work will be returned using the return postage included for the exchange. If no return postage was included in the print package, the prints will be held until the coordinator receives postage. The extension may be extended beyond one week, at the discretion of the coordinator, only if there is a national emergency making regular mail late.

Return Postage:

Return postage must accompany the print package when it is sent to the coordinator. If no return postage was included in the print package, the prints will be held until payment for postage is received by the coordinator. Coordinators are volunteers, and cannot be expected to pay participants' expenses.

Medium:

The Baren Exchange is a program for forum members to create, exchange and display editions of woodblock prints. At this time only linocut prints have been allowed in addition to woodcut prints.

If prints other than woodcut or linocut are submitted, they will not be included in the exchange, but will be returned to the sender using the enclosed return postage. If no postage was included, the prints will be held until it is received.

Paper dimensions:

Each exchange has a specific paper size requirement; the exchanges are not random collections, but organized folios of prints. The prints must be the same size, both to allow proper packaging and storage, and for efficient exhibiting. Participants should read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly.

If prints vary from the published size requirement they will be returned to the sender using the enclosed return postage. If no postage was included, the prints will be held until it is received.

Drop outs:

Dropouts will be allowed only until one month before the exchange time deadline. This will give people on the waiting list time to complete and submit their prints. If withdrawal becomes necessary, it should be done at the earliest date possible. (People on the waiting list who wish to have their names removed, should also do this as early as possible).

Participants who drop out after the withdrawal deadline has passed will have their name automatically eliminated from the next two exchanges (including waiting lists).

Participants who
1. drop out at (or after) the final deadline, or
2. drop out a second time after being reinstated, or
3. drop out without notifying the coordinator,

will have their name automatically eliminated from all future exchanges.

Communication:

Participants must be active [Baren] members and must have participated in discussions prior to signing up for an exchange. It is essential that the coordinator be in communication with the exchange participants. The participant must respond to e-mails sent by the coordinator and should notify the coordinator of any change in e-mail address.

Participants who become 'lost' and who do not respond to communications from the coordinator run the risk of being dropped from the exchange without further notice.
